ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would like to thank my old friend and teacher Dr. Hermann-Josef Frings of the Beethoven-Gymnasium in Bonn, Germany for many years of guidance and inspiration in classical studies. The idea for this Atlas goes back to a map project on the history of the Roman legions started in 1976.

I would also like to thank the staff of the many libraries I have been using over the years to collect material for the Atlas. Specifically the staff of the Universitaetsbibliotheken Bonn,  Wien and Wuerzburg, Staatsbibliothek Goettingen, the Libraries of Queen Mary & Westfield College, Imperial College and University College, the British Library and the Royal Geographical Society, London.

Further I would like to thank Nicholas Albery (Global Ideas) and Bill Thayer (Lacus Curtius) for helpful suggestions and corrections.
